Kennedy Death – Spotlight on Brain Cancer

Senator Edward Kennedy, a legendary political figure in the United States, died on Tuesday after a year long battle with malignant glioma, the most common type of brain cancer among adults. Although he had the most up-to-date treatments – surgery at Duke University Medical Center, chemotherapy and radiation – he was not able to survive the disease. Doctors still don’t know what causes brain tumors and the National Cancer Institute says the outlook for patients with malignant gliomas is poor.

Senator Kennedy’s brain tumor was diagnosed in May 2008 after he had a seizure, a frequent symptom of brain cancer.

At Duke University Medical Center, he had surgery to remove the tumor. His doctors said it was a success and Kennedy was discharged six days later.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Anthony Caputy says success means removing about 90 percent of the tumor. “Because then, the outcome is much better for the other treatments if you get to 90 percent,” he said.

Kennedy had what’s called a craniotomy, which involves opening the skull to expose the surface of the brain.

Surgeons then determine the exact location of the tumor, often with the help of an MRI or CT (cat) scan.

During part of the procedure, patients can be brought back to consciousness. That helps the doctors avoid cutting in areas that control speech. “The brain will not feel any pain, so you can stimulate while the patient is awake and test the motor function, the speech functions while the patient is awake which allows very accurate determination of where these eloquent areas of the brain are,” Dr. Caputy explains.

Doctors still don’t know what causes brain tumors. They do know what the risk factors are and Senator Kennedy had them all. Men are more likely to get brain tumors than women, as are white people and those 70 years or older.

Researchers are trying to discover the cause so they can treat it better. Dr. Markus Bredel at Northwestern University analyzes the genetic makeup of brain tumors, specifically gene mutations within glioblastomas, an even more aggressive form of the disease. But there are hundreds of thousands of genes in the tumors’ genome.

“The difficult question is which of those many, many genes are actually important in the disease process and which are just simply bystanders to the process,” Dr. Bredel said.

Senator Kennedy’s outcome was expected. And American flags are now at half staff in his honor. The National Cancer Institute says brain tumors rank among the highest causes of cancer deaths.

Doctors caution that even with treatment, these aggressive tumors always come back. What’s not known is when.

Headaches Remedies

feetFoot Massage

Why pop a pill to beat that nagging headache when a quick exercise and some home remedies can help!
Take your feet in your hands
The solution to your headaches is under your foot. That’s what relexologists claim. Reflexology says good health is the result of unblocked even energy. To treat pains in your skull, just massage the underside of the two big toes, particularly the one on the left foot. To relieve more pain, massage the whole foot: begin with the sole, working from toes to heel. Each point on your foot connects to a particular part of your body.

Diet Can Cause Headache

75c818a1350a1b1e_tn

A headache is every professional’s constant companion. In addition to stress and overwork, what you eat and drink can bring on pain too.

Chocolate could harm.

Almost 20% of headaches are caused by what you eat or drink: dairy products, chocolates and eggs, for instance. A headache is your body’s way of protesting against what you are giving it. To find out what you are allergic to, keep a food diary, so that you can gradually eliminate the food that brings on pain. Some of the most common suspects are chocolate, dairy products, citrus fruits and processed meats.

What causes Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes:
It can be genetic or can be from malnutrition (poor diet) and environment. in most of the cases, diabetes occurs because there is abnormal secretion of some hormones in blood which act as antagonists to insulin. Example- Adrenocortical hormone, Adrenaline hormone and Thyroid hormone.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is also called non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes. It occurs when the body produces enough insulin but cannot utilize it effectively. This type of diabetes usually develops in middle age. A general observation says that about 90-95 % of people suffering with diabetes are type 2; about 80 percent are overweight. It is more common among people who are older; obese; have a family history of diabetes; have had gestational diabetes. There are number of risk factors found to be responsible for type 2 diabetes like, the more the Etiology and Risk factors carried by an individual, the higher the risk for developing diabetes.

Following are the Causes of Diabetes

Hereditary or Inherited Traits : It is strongly believed that due to some genes which passes from one generation to another, a person can inherit diabetes. It depends upon closeness of blood relationship as mother is diabetic, the risk is 2 to 3%, father is diabetic, the risk is more than the previous case and if both the parents are diabetic, the child has much greater risk for diabetes.
Age : Increased age is a factor which gives more possibility than in younger age. This disease may occur at any age, but 80% of cases occur after 50 year, incidences increase with the age factor.
Poor Diet (Malnutrition Related Diabetes) : Improper nutrition, low protein and fiber intake, high intake of refined products are the expected reasons for developing diabetes.
Obesity and Fat Distribution : Being overweight means increased insulin resistance, that is if body fat is more than 30%, BMI 25+, waist grith 35 inches in women or 40 inches in males.
Sedentary Lifestyle : People with sedentary lifestyle are more prone to diabetes, when compared to those who exercise thrice a week, are at low risk of falling prey to diabetes.
Stress : Either physical injury or emotional disturbance is frequently blamed as the initial cause of the disease. Any disturbance in Cortiosteroid or ACTH therapy may lead to clinical signs of the disease.
Drug Induced: Clozapine (Clozaril), olanzapine (Zyprexa), risperidone (Risperdal), quetiapine (Seroquel) and ziprasidone (Geodon) are known to induce this lethal disease.
Infection : Some of the strephylococci is suppose to be responsible factor for infection in pancreas.
Sex : Diabetes is commonly seen in elderly especially males but, strongly in women and those females with multiple pregnancy or suffering from (PCOS) Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
Hypertension : It had been reported in many studies that there is direct relation between high systolic pressure and diabetes.
Serum lipids and lipoproteins : High triglyceride and cholesterol level in the blood is related to high blood sugars, in some cases it has been studied that risk is involved even with low HDL levels in circulating blood.

More Than 50 Ways to Prevent Diabetes
Many Americans are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes…
. . . and being overweight increases that risk. But, there is good news. Losing a small amount of weight, by getting 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week and eating healthy, will help prevent diabetes. To get started, use this guide for ideas on moving more, eating healthier, and tracking your progress.

Small Steps for Big Rewards!

Reduce Portion Sizes

Less on your plate, Nate.

Keep meat, poultry and fish servings to about 3 ounces (about the size of a deck of cards).

Make less food look like more by serving your meal on a salad or breakfast plate.

Try not to snack while cooking or cleaning the kitchen.

Try to eat sensible meals and snacks at regular times throughout the day.

Make sure you eat breakfast every day.

Use broth and cured meats (smoked turkey and turkey bacon) in small amounts. They are high in sodium. Low sodium broths are available in cans and powder.

Share your desserts.

When eating out, have a big vegetable salad, then split an entre with a friend or have the other half wrapped to go.

Stir fry, broil or bake with non-stick spray or low sodium broth and try to cook with less oil and butter.

Drink a glass of water or other “no-calorie” beverage 10 minutes before your meal to take the edge off your appetite.

Select the healthier choice at fast food restaurants. Try grilled chicken instead of the cheeseburger. Skip the french fries or replace the fries with a salad.

Choosing the Right Bicycle

When it comes to getting a bicycle for exercise or fun, there are plenty of options to choose from. For openers, there are comfort and cruiser bicycles. Think old school Schwinn – bikes with balloon tires and big seats. These are the preferred choice of many recreational bike riders.

Other choices include mountain bikes, racing bikes, touring bikes and specialty bicycles such as; recumbent, BMX and tandem (2 person) bikes. No matter which type of bike you may choose, biking is a great way to increase stamina, improve cardiovascular strength and have all around better fitness.

Mountain biking has become one of the more popular bike riding activities, enjoyed by a wide age range of people. Be advised that a good quality mountain bike can be fairly expensive, so you will want to decide what your real needs are. When shopping always ask plenty of questions and be sure to let the sales person know what your main use for the bike will be. You might even try some bike rentals to help you make a decision. You may decide you only need a light duty mountain bike, which would also be good for regular riding.

When it comes to riding, remember that not all biking trails are for experts only. Mountain bike trails are rated – the easiest is green, an intermediate is blue and difficult trails are pink. Go slowly to begin, mountain biking requires some skill and you’ll need to learn how to handle the bike to minimize chance of injury.

Another type of bike that is gaining fans is the recumbent bike. These are becoming very popular with older riders and cross country riders. On a recumbent bike you have a very comfortable seat that you can lean back in, much like sitting in your favorite reclining chair. Your butt is very comfortably cushioned. Your feet are out in front of you, similar to when you’re driving your car.

An interesting note; recumbent bikes are the fastest type of bicycle. One reason is that with your legs extended forward and pedaling in front of you, you are able to move more weight with much less effort than a conventional bike. Beginning recumbent riders say it takes a while to develop what are called “recumbent muscles” but once you do you may never go back to an ordinary bicycle.

But whatever type of bicycle you choose, just do it! Biking is a great way to get an aerobic work out and burn calories at the same time. The best part is that anyone can ride a bike and it’s a great family recreation to be enjoyed together.

Brazil swine flu toll 557, highest in world

SF-H1N1-300x225

A total of 577 people have died from swine flu in Brazil, putting the South American nation at the top of the list of countries reporting fatalities from the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, the health ministry said.

The mortality rate, however, is 0.29 percent in Brazil, well below the 1.08 percent rate in Argentina, the 0.75 percent rate in Chile and the 0.67 percent rate in Costa Rica, which have the highest levels in Latin America, health officials said Thursday.

The toll from swine flu stood at 488 as of last Friday, the health ministry said, noting that the jump in the death toll was due to lab tests coming back positive for people who died between Aug 16 and Aug 22.

Brazil now has the highest number of deaths from swine flu followed by the US with 522, Argentina with 439 and Mexico with 179, according to the World Health Organization.

A total of 5,206 people have contracted swine flu and undergone treatment as of Wednesday, the health ministry said.

The government has decided to appropriate 2.1 billion reais ($1.13 billion) for the purchase of vaccinations against swine flu, health officials said.

The funds will allow health officials to purchase 73 million doses of the vaccine, which will be administered during the first half of 2010 to deal with an expected outbreak of the disease during the southern hemisphere winter.

About Swine Flu

Mexico Swine Flu

Swine influenza virus (SIV) is caused by Orthomyxoviruses that are endemic to pig populations. SIV strains isolated to date have been classified either as Influenzavirus C or one of the various subtypes of the genus Influenzavirus A.

Swine flu, unlike bird flu, is able to pass from human to human contact. The 2009 swine flu outbreak is the spread of a new strain of H1N1 influenza virus that was first detected by public health agencies in March 2009. Local outbreaks of influenza-like illness were detected in three areas of Mexico, but the presence of this new strain was not discovered for a month.

Following this discovery in the parts of United States bordering Mexico, its presence was swiftly confirmed in the local outbreaks in Mexico, and in isolated cases elsewhere. By April 27, the new strain was confirmed also in Canada, Spain, and the United Kingdom and suspected in many other nations, with over 1,800 candidate cases.

The new strain is an apparent reassortment of several strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1, including a strain endemic in humans and two strains endemic in pigs, as well as an avian influenza.

Reassortment is common in influenza viruses, due to the structure of their genome. This particular reassortment is consistent with a transmission of swine influenza from pig to human combined with the mixing of two viral infections in the same person.

In April both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expressed serious concerns about this novel strain, because it apparently transmits from human to human, has had a relatively high mortality rate in Mexico, and because it has the potential to become a flu pandemic.

On April 25, 2009, the WHO determined the situation to be a formal “public health emergency of international concern, with knowledge lacking in regard to “the clinical features, epidemiology, and virology of reported cases and the appropriate responses.

Government health agencies around the world also expressed concerns over the outbreak and are monitoring the situation closely.

Recommendations to prevent infection by the virus consist of the standard personal precautions against influenza. This includes frequent washing of hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially after being out in public. People should avoid touching their mouth, nose or eyes with their hands unless they’ve washed their hands. If people do cough, they should either cough into a tissue and throw it in the garbage immediately or, if they cough in their hand, they should wash their hands immediately.

Many countries confirmed that inbound international passengers will be screened. Typical airport health screening involves asking passengers which countries they have visited and checking whether they feel or look particularly unwell.

On April 27, the CDC recommended the use of Tamiflu and Relenza for both treatment and prevention of the new strain.

Some physicians in the US are recommending the use of masks when in public. The purpose of a face mask is to effectively cover a person’s mouth and nose so that if a person is around someone who is infected, there is a decreased likelihood of transmission.

Questions and answers about swine flu

Mexico is contending with an outbreak of swine flu, suspected in the deaths of dozens of people and sickening perhaps 1,000. In the United States, at least eight cases have been confirmed with the infection, all of them in California and Texas; only one person was hospitalized. Here are some questions and answers about the illness:

Q. What is swine flu?

A. Swine flu is a respiratory illness in pigs caused by a virus. The swine flu virus routinely causes outbreaks in pigs but doesn’t usually kill many of them.

Q. Can people get swine flu?

A. Swine flu viruses don’t usually infect humans. There have been occasional cases, usually among people who’ve had direct contact with infected pigs, such as farm workers. “We’ve seen swine influenza in humans over the past several years, and in most cases, it’s come from direct pig contact. This seems to be different, said Dr. Arnold Monto, a flu expert with the University of Michigan.

Q. Can it spread among humans?

A. There have been cases of the virus spreading from human to human, probably in the same way as seasonal flu, through coughing and sneezing by infected people.

Q. What are the symptoms of swine flu?

A. The symptoms are similar to those of regular flu — fever, cough, fatigue, lack of appetite.

Q. Is the same swine flu virus making people sick in Mexico and the U.S.?

A. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the Mexican virus samples match the U.S. virus. The virus is a mix of human virus, bird virus from North America and pig viruses from North America, Europe and Asia.

Q. Are there drugs to treat swine flu in humans?

A. There are four different drugs approved in the U.S. to treat the flu, but the new virus has shown resistance to the two oldest. If you suspects any symptoms of Swine flu, contact your physician.

Q. Does a regular flu shot protect against swine flu?

A. The seasonal flu vaccine used in the U.S. this year won’t likely provides protection against the latest swine flu virus. There is a swine flu vaccine for pigs but not for humans.

Q. Should residents of California or Texas do anything special?

A. The CDC recommends routine precautions to prevent the spread of infectious diseases: wash your hands often, cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick, stay at home and limit contact with others.

Q. What about traveling to Mexico?

A. The CDC has not warned Americans against traveling to Mexico but advises that they be aware of the illnesses there and take precautions to protect against infections, like washing their hands.

Take Care Guys..

Government of India Swine Flu Advisory

The number of reported cases of H1N1 Influenza A in India and other countries has been on the rise in recent days.

In light of this development, we would like to draw your attention to Preventive Measures to keep in mind in order to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Measures to consider, particularly when you are in an area where flu is rampant in the community:

Maintain good personal hygiene. Wash your hands frequently. Carry a hand sanitizer for use when soap and water aren’t readily available
Avoid touching your face.
Avoid people who seem to be sick.
Avoid crowds as much as possible.
If you cannot avoid crowds, consider wearing a face mask or a respirator (if you are trained in using a respirator).
Monitor your health, and seek medical attention if you feel unwell.

To reduce the spread of flu: “Prevention is better than Cure”

Cover coughs and sneezes with a mask or a tissue.
Stay at home if you are unwell.
Limit your contact with others as much as possible.
Contact the Doctor or the Nodal Center nearest to your location, if you or your children develop flu-like symptoms.
When you arrive at the hospital, ensure that you tell them that you have recently been in an area that has reported H1N1 influenza.
Do not Panic

Quick Information dossier on H1N1 Symptoms

The symptoms of H1N1 swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhoea and vomiting associated with H1N1 swine flu. Severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and even deaths have been reported with H1N1 swine flu infection. Like seasonal flu, H1N1 swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic diseases.

In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

Fast breathing or difficulty in breathing
Bluish or gray skin colour
Not drinking enough fluids
Severe or persistent vomiting
Not waking up or not interacting
Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
Sudden dizziness
Confusion
Severe or persistent vomiting
Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

5 REASONS NOT TO PANIC – H1N1

The world has learnt a lot about swine flu — much more than was known about previous pandemics, and much more rapidly. And technology allows instant sharing across the globe. Based on worldwide experience documented by scientists, here are 5 solid reasons why you should not panic

1 Low Fatality: Out of over 2 lakh cases worldwide, the number of deaths is just short of 1,900, or, less than 1%.
WHO says many countries are no longer recording confirmed cases. Actual number of cases might run into many more which would bring down the number of people dying of swine flu to much lower than 1%. Many of the deaths are also due to underlying conditions or complications. In short, swine flu is not a killer disease like TB (death rate 3.5%) or respiratory diseases (death rate 11%). There is more likelihood of death in a traffic accident (1.8%) or a fire (1.4%) than by catching swine flu

2 Moderate Symptoms: Fear of suffering is next only to fear of death. Swine flu causes aches, fever, sore
throat, cough, runny nose and in some cases vomiting. All this will make you (and your family) pretty miserable if you do get infected. But it is no different from having a severe case of common flu or cold. And, the symptoms can be further reduced by taking (under doctor’s guidance!) suitable painkillers and analgesics. Compare this to the enormous suffering and pain caused by other diseases like malaria or cancer or a stroke

3 Short Duration: The illness lasts up to a week in most cases. In some cases it may be shorter. It won’t
haunt you for a month or two like jaundice or typhoid. For this week you will suffer some isolation, but mainly you will be resting throughout, and having lots of fluids. No injections, no drips, no constant testing. Tamiflu is there, but studies show it only reduces the duration by one to two days

4 Complete Recovery: After the fever goes away on its own, you will feel weak for a few days — then back to
normal. There are no lingering effects, no scars, no slow road to recovery. No future complication — in fact, you would have strengthened your immunity to the flu. You can start interacting with others within 24 hours

5 Panic creates problems: If you panic, rush around, crowd hospitals at the slightest sneeze, you might end
up increasing the chances of actually getting swine flu. Besides, you will be unnecessarily choking the stretched medical system. Swine flu is a disease, not the end of the world. Treat it with respect and deal with it
